Can I get a woo-hoo? Even a little one?

I'm thrilled to hear about Kyell's nomination for the Washington Science Fiction Association’s award, just like I would hope the rest of us are. He's certainly a skilled author, and I knew this, but it's great to see him getting more public recognition outside of the furry community.

I agree with Sci Cheetah: Let's celebrate this as a happy event, but let's not leave it at that. Let's use it as an incentive to see how many MORE of our authors can turn out work of that quality!

But a tongue-in-cheek attitude only works when it's evident that it's tongue-in-cheek. Someone not familiar with a person's writing style will take it pretty straight-forward. As someone who had never seen this site until just a couple of days before this particular article, I read the headline and took it completely at face value, especially as nothing in the article itself contradicts the apparent snipe. As it stands, it comes off as being a bit misleading.

A lot of this website is rather tongue-in-cheek. The Ursas have a lot of well-documented problems, as do many awards. We're just more familiar with them because they're a community-bestowed award, and we're all part of the community. To someone from the outside, I believe the Ursas probably appear more prestigious than they do to us, who see all the sausage factory workings.

Sonious does make a point, however, that furries tend to suffer from "furry shame" and discount their own achievements. I don't think that's necessarily what's going on here. I think Lovejoy's just trying to be funny and mean at the same time--something he does very well. His previous coverage of the Ursas treated them seriously.

Heaven knows the fandom needs more "legitimacy" seeings as furrys themselves don't see their rewards as anything but fictional apparently.

Sometimes its hard to see who sees us as illegitimate, the general public or the furries ourselves.

bersl2: I gathered that was likely the intent. But the 'headline' to the article doesn't really convey that, and comes off as rather insulting to the Ursas. It reads more like, "The heck with that other junk he's won, he's just been nominated for a REAL award!"

That was very much my impression when I first read it.

Well, it's not so much that the Ursa Majors are not an actual award, since they clearly are an award; it's just that it's much more significant for someone outside the fandom to honor a furry work and its creator. There's a big gap between "RAH RAH WE'RE AWESOME" and "Of those submitted to us, this work of speculative fiction is the best work coming out of a small publisher in 2009."

Rather than for us to simply just say congrats and well done, I believe that we should go on to say, okay, now it's my turn. Kyell Gold has been striving to push the furry community further into the spotlight in a positive manner and he is succeeding. It is my personal belief that he has now set the bar higher for us to push further and further. We need to get on the train and begin to strive for more as a community. I know that I myself will be striving to have literary works as good, if not better than Kyell Gold's works. I see him as an inspiration and a rival. And hopefully, someday, I can call him a friend too.
